Operating the Machine
By hand
- Type on the keys — or press your own keyboard.
- Line-space lever (left of carriage): roll to the next line.
- Platen knobs (ends): drag up/down to feed paper.
- Paper: drag it; yank sharply to tear it free.
- Carriage: drag left/right; it clicks one notch at a time.
From the keyboard
- A–Z, digits, punctuation — strike keys.
- Enter — line-space lever & carriage return.
- Backspace — backspacer (ratchet click).
- Tab — tab to the next stop.
- Caps Lock / Shift — shift (caps).
- > key — ribbon selector: black ⇄ red.
The machine's rules
- Bell rings 8 spaces before the margin; the line ends hard at the stop.
- Margin release key lets you push past it.
- Two keys struck within ~40 ms can jam the basket — wiggle a key to clear it.
- The ribbon wears; ink fades until you turn the spool.
- When the page fills, pull the sheet out — it lands in Pages.
